Mission / Purpose

As a Centre focusing on translational research and personalised cancer care, our mission is to align world-class cancer research with rapid translation to the clinic to improve outcomes for cancer patients by:

  • building world-class facilities and strategic collaborations to enhance advances in science that translate into improved cancer diagnosis, treatment and prevention
  • developing integrated, multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional approaches to cancer research and patient care to reduce the impact of cancer in the community
  • providing a holistic, compassionate approach to cancer care throughout the entire cancer journey, from diagnosis to full recovery where cure is possible, and supportive care and information to all, with preservation of patient dignity
  • establishing world-class educational and training programs to develop high quality researchers and clinicians to optimise translational outcomes

History

The Kinghorn Cancer Centre was established to bring together the cutting-edge research of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and the clinical expertise of St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney to create a new model of personalised cancer treatment for patients — from bench to bedside. Over the last decade, the Centre has supported more than 25,000 patients, including over 25% from rural areas, and published more than 770 research discoveries in prestigious scientific journals.

The Centre is the largest site for the delivery of novel cancer clinical trials in New South Wales and is facilitating world-first research discoveries in many of the hardest to treat cancers such as pancreas, advanced breast, prostate and brain.

Key impacts include the establishment of the Australian Genomics Cancer Medicine Centre (AGCMC), a nationwide network of research and treatment centres that facilitates, supports and promotes clinical trials in genomic cancer medicine, and the New South Wales Early Phase Clinical Trials Alliance (NECTAR).

The Kinghorn Cancer Centre has had enormous impact since its inception in 2012. Our clinicians have improved access to new drugs for patients across the country, curated areas of sub-speciality expertise for rare cancers, helped vulnerable populations access cancer care and worked closely with research colleagues to discover the next generation of cancer treatments across drugs, theranostics and radiation therapy.

Working in tandem with clinical trial and basic science researchers, we aim to provide the most up to date personalised treatments and to contribute to cutting edge research (particularly in the area of genomics), so as to fast-track the introduction of new treatments.
